Eye diseases and refraction anomalies
Children ophthalmology

A few people now that newborn children see very badly, vision gradually improves, develops and is achieving normal parameters at the age of seven years.

90% information about the surrounding world is obtained through eyes and children become acquainted with the surrounding world firstly due to ability to see. Connection between the eye and cortex is established exactly in this period.

The light energy, correct perception of surrounding world images through eyes – all this stimulates growth of the child, his metabolism, normalises and fastens his psycho – physical development from the first year of life.

Lack or inadequate correction of refraction defects (farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism), strabismus, congenital eye diseases, their late diagnostics can lead to non- reversible consequences.

Early ophthalmologic examination enables to find out deviations from normal condition timely and to start the necessary treatment in due time. The nature has arranged so that if the correct diagnose was not set in time and treatment not started until the age of ten years, in some cases even until the age of three to five years, even an anatomically normal eye is not achieving ability to have a high vision. Therefore it is recommended to consult the child by children ophthalmologist during the first year of life: the first time at 3-4 months – to exclude congenital pathology and the second time at the age of 8-12 months – to find out refraction defects (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), congenital strabismus and its correction in due time.

A healthy child should be examined in future by an ophthalmologist at the age of 3 years, then at 5-6 years, then every year during all the school years.

THE EYE MICROSURGERY CENTRE (ACU MIKROKIRURGIJAS CENTRS) is equipped by a wide range of high quality equipment for diagnostics and eye disease treatment for children from 3 years of age. Experienced clinicians trained in children clinics in Latvia and Russia (the institute by Helmholz, the institute by Fyodorov) are dealing with children.

The modern equipment enables full ophthalmologic examination of a child, to administer an adequate correction (glasses or contact lenses), to perform a complex treatment of amblyopia, strabismus, nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism in case of necessity, using traditional as well as modern methodologies. Such methods enable a fast vision improvement, to strengthen acommodation and to liquidate or minimise strabismus angle.

Dear patients, please remember – good vision in childhood – it is a guarantee of a wholesome life in future!!!
